Why does AI writing "feel" different? The em dash dilemma
Ever read a text and just felt it was written by AI? You're not imagining it. One of the most consistent "digital fingerprints" AI leaves behind isn't in the words it chooses, but in the punctuation it uses.
The "AI fingerprint" you can't unsee
AI models like ChatGPT are trained on billions of professionally edited texts: books, news articles, and scientific papers. In this world, typographic rules are strict.
- They always use the correct, formal em dash (—) for a pause.
- They always use proper “smart quotes” (curly ones) for dialogue.
- They use the single-character ellipsis (…) for trailing off.
Humans are "lazy" (and that's okay!)
Now, think about how you type. You're on a keyboard with no em dash key. What do you do? You use the simple hyphen (-). You use the easy-to-find "straight quotes" and type three dots (...) for an ellipsis.
This tiny difference is one of the easiest and most consistent ways an AI detector—or a suspicious professor—can flag a text as machine-generated. Your "human" essay might be perfect, but its punctuation screams "robot!"
